Three Items to Throw Away After a Fire

10/9/2023 (Permalink)

Firefighter puts out house fire Firefighting measures can impact the safety of household items.

If you recently experienced fire damage in your Hopkinsville home, you may be wondering what you should throw away and what you should try to salvage. Some items are definitely worth saving, while others need to be tossed. Here are three things you should get rid of if they have been present during a fire.

1. Food

Food can be chemically changed after being exposed to high heat, making it unsafe for consumption. It can also come in contact with water and other substances while the fire is being put out. If you have any doubts about a food or it was found opened, charred or soaking wet, it needs to be put in the garbage, particularly if it is perishable.

2. Cosmetics

Throw away your makeup or skincare products if they look to be burned or seem to have been damaged in another way by the fire. They may not be safe to use on your body after being exposed to different elements such as smoke and firefighting chemicals.

3. Medicine

Like food and cosmetics, medicine either goes on or in your body. As a result, it needs to be kept at a regulated temperature and away from any materials that could harm you if your body comes into contact with them. Do not hesitate to dispose of them if they seem to be damaged in any way or if you have your misgivings about holding on to them.

While it may seem that there are many things you have to throw away after a fire, there are also many objects that a fire restoration company can help you salvage. Some of these things include clothing, documents and household valuables. Do some thorough research - you will be happily surprised to learn that there are many belongings that you will be able to save after a fire, helping you ease yourself back into a more normal life. If you have experienced fire damage, SERVPRO of Christian, Todd, Logan and Simpson Counties is here to help 24/7. Give us a call at 270-885-8811.

4 Safe Candles Alternatives for your Home

10/5/2021 (Permalink)

4 Candle Alternatives That Are Safe To Use In Your Home

When darkness falls, or the air needs freshening, people often turn to candles. Despite the appeal of their various scents and simplicity, candles pose a fire risk to your home in Christian, Todd, Logan and Simpson Counties . Instead of accepting the risk, you can consider any of these four candle alternatives.

1. LED String Lights

LED lights are not just for the holiday season. With their use inside your home, you can provide the same light a candle does. This can be done by stringing them across a table or filling a glass with a line of them to create a makeshift lamp. LED lights are a flameless alternative to creatively brighten your house in whatever color you wish.

2. Electric Candles

As a direct replacement for candles, tea lights use batteries instead of fire. They have the appearance of candles if you desire to preserve their aesthetic. The major advantage of electric candles compared to typical candles is the ability to leave them lit even when you can’t monitor them. With this substitution, there is no need to fear a candle fire while asleep or in another room.

3. Reed Diffusers

If the pleasant scent of a candle is what you are looking for in your candle alternatives, reed diffusers are a natural option. Using only reeds and scented oils, the aroma seeps into the air and fills a room. The scented oil comes in many varieties so you can find one to your liking without the worry of any dangerous heat.

4. Wax Warmers

While similar to a candle, wax warmers are flameless and safer. By using electricity or batteries, the dish containing wax heats up and carries the scent around like a candle but without the flame.

Candle alternatives are helpful for saving your residence from the risk of fire. Even if your best efforts of fire prevention fail, fire damage restoration is available for the aftermath of when a candle or other flame goes awry. Using flameless sources of scent and light will make your home less fire prone.

  • Do not use water on a gas fire or a grease fire. Pot lids will smother a fire. You can also use (a lot of) baking soda. Pour a box of baking soda on the fire

Preventing Dryer Fires

3/31/2021 (Permalink)

aftermath of a dryer fire Dryer Fire

Every year firefighters across the country respond to 13,820 home fires caused by dryers according to the National Fire Protection Association.

To help prevent these type of fires here are four best practices to ensure safety in the laundry room

1. Clean the lint filter

Not once a month, or once a week, but clean the lint after every load. Not only will it help prevent a fire, but your laundry will dry faster

2. Replace accordion style ducts

Generally, dryers are equipped with a 4-inch vent in the back, which homeowners or installers connect to the exterior vent with a duct. But not all ducts will do.

If you see a plastic or foil accordion-style duct connecting your appliance to the vent, it’s a good idea to replace it. These are risky because they can sag, allowing lint to build up at low points and trapping lint in their ridges.

3. Clean the dryer duct annually

If you notice your clothes are taking longer to dry, there maybe a blockage in the dryer vent system.  If you don't see exhaust from the outside, the vent maybe blocked with lint. Disconnect your dryer from the power source, disconnect the duct from the dryer and vacuum both the dryer and duct as much as you can access. While back there, it would be a good idea to clean behind and under the dryer

4. Handle chemical stains with care

Clothes stained with gas, cooking oils or other flammable agents need to be handled with caution. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends washing such clothing more than once and then hanging to dry. If a dryer must be used, use the lowest setting and a cycle that concludes with a cool-down period.

Answering the Call

On January 15th, 2020, our office got the call from a State Farm insurance agent who had a family suffer from a large fire overnight. The fire started from smoking materials in a first floor bedroom and it spread throughout both levels and all rooms. Our production technicians and project manager immediately headed to the home to do a free board up of the windows and doors that were blown out.

The family members helped sort through their salvageable contents and we took care of the rest. Our crews were able to take inventory of the contents that were disposed of, take out the affected drywall and insulation, remove any flooring that was trapping moisture, and do a general cleanup of the area. Our next step is to begin the reconstruction process and get this family moved back in as soon as possible.

COMMON CAUSES OF HOUSE FIRES

Firefighters standing beside a house on fire SERVPRO can assist with any type of Fire or Smoke damage.

Can you guess the most common causes of house fires? Fire damage may result in ways you least expect. Take precautionary measures now to protect your home from the following fire instigators.

  • Cooking equipment: Cooking equipment is the number one cause of house fires. Pots and pans can quickly overheat when left unattended or mishandled. Be sure to turn handles towards the middle of the stove to avoid children from accidentally grabbing it from the burner. When leaving the house, remember to turn off stove-top burners and ovens.
  • Smoking in Bedrooms: Avoid smoking in bedrooms at all costs. A cigarette butt can stay lit for hours and cause a flame after coming into contact with clothes or furniture. Open flames such as candles also pose a danger for many residents.
  • Old electrical equipment: Older lampshades and light fittings may build up heat, and weak bases could pose a tipping hazard. Electrical equipment such as these should be checked for faulty cords, and the power point must not be overloaded with double adapter plugs.
  • Flammable liquids: Liquids such as petrol, kerosene, or methylated spirits should be kept away from heat sources and stored properly according to their label.

Nobody wants to come home to irreparable damage. By knowing these common causes of house fires, you and your neighborhood can live a little bit safer. When accidents happen, SERVPRO Christian, Todd, Logan, and Simpson Counties is here to clean fire damage and restore your home quickly and professionally.

How To Upgrade To a Smart Fire Alarm System

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke detector of fire alarm in action When you are ready for a change to your smoke alarm system, smart devices are a smart choice

How To Upgrade To a Smart Fire Alarm System

Many homeowners are intrigued by the convenience and added security of a smart smoke alarm system. A smart system can send a signal to your phone, letting you know if there is smoke in your home even when you are away. Before you take the plunge and get an expensive upgrade for your home in Elkton, KY, however, it's smart to start small to figure out what works best for you.

Smart Batteries

For some homeowners, smart batteries are the only upgrade they ever need. You use them just like regular batteries in every smoke detector in your home. The battery itself sends alerts to your phone in several situations:

  • If smoke is detected
  • If the battery power is low
  • If you want to silence the alarm remotely

Smart batteries are an economical choice, as they typically only cost about $15 apiece. If you have a small home, this means you can likely replace all your batteries for under $100. As an added bonus, you won't have to hear a constant chirp but rather one gentle ping when the battery needs to be replaced.

Listeners

Another option that can be inexpensive, particularly for larger homes, is a listener. It, too, works with your existing smoke alarm system. A listener alerts your phone any time it gets a frequency from a detector within its range, and one listener can usually cover a whole floor of your house. Instead of having to install many devices, you just install one or two.

Smart Alarms

You may decide that you want to replace all the smoke detectors in your home. According to fire remediation experts, replacing worn-out detectors is an integral part of fire safety. If it's time to replace them anyway, it may be worth the cost to upgrade to an integrated smart system that can alert you to a problem no matter where you are.
When you are ready for a change to your smoke alarm system, smart devices are a smart choice. They add an extra layer of protection by letting you know as soon as there is a problem, even if you aren't home.

What Can Be Saved After a Fire?

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

a space heater Space heaters are a cause of many fires in the colder season.

If you recently experienced fire damage in your Oak Grove, KY, home, you may be wondering what you should throw away and what you should try to salvage. Some items are definitely worth saving, while others need to be tossed. Here are three things that you should get rid of if they have been present during a household fire.

2. Cosmetics

Throw away your makeup or skin care products if they look to be burned or seem to have been damaged in another way by the fire.

Do not hesitate to dispose of them if they seem to be damaged in any way or you have your misgivings about holding on to them.

Ways To Prevent a Fire in Your Home

Fire Preparation Tips To Keep Your Home Safe

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are an average of 358,500 residential fires annually. These fires cause deaths, injuries and significant property damage. No one wants to be the victim of a home fire; therefore, it’s critical to understand how you can prevent this tragedy from happening. Here are some fire preparation tips to keep your home safe.

Practice Fire-Safe Habits

Though there are many causes of a fire, smoking materials are the leading source. Therefore, it’s important to smoke responsibly:

  • Smoke outside whenever possible
  • Never smoke when you’re drowsy or on medication
  • Don’t smoke around someone who is on oxygen
  • Don’t smoke in bed
  • Use deep ashtrays and douse cigarettes with water once finished

In addition to smoking materials, candles and portable heaters can cause a home fire. Though it seems harmless, never leave a candle burning when you’re not around. Additionally, turn off portable heaters when you’re going to sleep or not in the room. Educate your children about fire safety and teach them not to play with matches or lighters.

Guard Your Home

Fire damage can be extensive so it’s wise to protect your Elkton, KY, home. Fire preparation starts with installing smoke alarms on every floor in your home. You should also have a carbon monoxide detector installed in central areas outside of bedrooms.

Lessen Fire Risks

Fire safety starts with decreasing risks. Heating sources, electrical wiring, overloaded outlets, and appliances and electrical devices should be properly maintained in order to prevent fires.

Cook Safely

The best tip for cooking safely is to stay in the kitchen when grilling, boiling, baking, simmering, etc. Another safety tip in the kitchen is to move items away from the stove that can easily catch fire such as towels and pot holders.

Fire preparation should be important to every homeowner. You can prevent a home fire by practicing fire-safe habits, guarding your home, decreasing fire risks and cooking safely. Fire safety should be a top priority in your home; however, if you ever need help with fire cleanup, contact a fire restoration professional.

One of the most important emergency preparedness activities you can do as a family is to be ready for a fire. Even minor incidents can lead to danger and destructive damage. It's essential that every member of your family knows and understands the quickest, safest way out of your Adairville, KY, home if a fire starts. Make it a priority today to create a fire escape plan. If you have a plan, revisit it and make sure it's effective. It could save your life someday.

Why It's Important

If a disaster or emergency situation hits your home, you don't want to be left in a panic, not knowing how to react. It's especially critical that younger children are aware of proper procedures. if you have an emergency escape plan and practice it regularly, you can have peace of mind that if the unthinkable happened, you and everyone at home could have the presence of mind to get out without incident.

Meet and Discuss

Your first step in coming up with a fire escape plan should be to map out your home and property. Talk about what each person should do if the smoke detectors go off or if someone sees fire or smells smoke. Here are some other important elements of the plan:

  • Designate two exit spots from each room of the house.
  • Teach everyone about the dangers of smoke and why it's critical to stay low when escaping.
  • Identify a meeting place where everyone can safely gather outside.

Role Play

Hopefully, you'll never have to put this plan into practice. However, the more familiar you are with your escape plan, the more comfortable you will be and the greater the chance you'll be successful. Simulate your escape procedures once a year. Ensure that everyone in your household knows exactly how to react in this situation.
A fire escape plan isn't something to take lightly. The Red Cross can help you develop a plan, as can professional fire restoration companies.

What Happens To Your Electronics After a Fire?

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO can clean electronics after a fire

Whether you've experienced a kitchen fire or an electrical fire, the contents of your commercial property have most likely been effected in some way. This includes electronics like computers, printers and televisions. If you're in Auburn, KY, what can you do about it?

What's The Damage?

While fire itself is probably the most obviously damaging to its surroundings, more insidious side effects like smoke damage can be almost as harmful, and more pervasive. Smoke is airborne so it can reach almost any surface. Unfortunately, soot can cause electronics and appliances to malfunction. Some common resulting issues are:

  • part degradation, because soot is acidic
  • shorted circuits, because smoke has a magnetic charge
  • overheating, because of the insulating effect of the black film left behind by smoke

Are They Salvageable?

Unless your machine was part of an electrical fire itself, the answer is most likely yes. Before taking any further action, you should shut off and unplug all electronics and appliances present. In the case of a computer, try and remove any hard drives or memory. If possible, transfer what you can to an undamaged computer or storage space.

Can You Do It Yourself?

Due to the complex nature of digital machines and the specificity of the situation, you are better off calling a professional remediation service for your computer cleanup job. This is especially true if you have a large number of electronic assets. These types of items are valuable, so it is in your best interest to ensure that they are not damaged further through ignorance. In the proper hands, your appliances could be as good as new.
If you've managed to come out the other side of an electrical fire, you are probably looking to continue to run your business while you rebuild. In order to do that, you shouldn't forget about smoke damage and do what you can to keep your electronics in working order. Computers need love, too!

While fire cleaning specialists are very skilled at restoring the structure of your home and even salvaging belongings in the case one does occur, fire prevention is key. Here are the top five causes of a home fire that you should be aware and a few precautions you can take to keep your home and family safe.

1. Cooking Fire

Kitchen fires caused by cooking equipment is the top cause of a home fire. Make sure to always stay in the kitchen and supervise food that is cooking, and prevent grease fires by reducing splattering and heating oil at the correct temperature.

2. Heating Equipment

One of the most dangerous fire causes is heating equipment that catches flame. This can be caused by portable heaters that are located too close to flammable objects or by a malfunctioning or unmaintained furnace.

3. Smoking in Bedrooms

A lit flame from a cigarette and a room full of flammable objects is not a good combination. From accidentally dropping the cigarette to a butt that isn’t completely put out, your best bet is to take your smoking outside.

4. Electrical Fires

Electrical fires are often caused by damaged cords, multiple power strips, or broken devices. Consistently check wires and equipment to prevent them from unexpectedly bursting into flames.

5. Candles

While candles smell great and are the perfect way to create a cozy atmosphere, they can become dangerous when left burning throughout the night or when you leave the house.

Is My Furnace Working Properly?

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

A furnace can cause fire in your home if it doesn't have the proper maintenance.

Spring can be an unpredictable season in Hopkinsville, KY, and it is the perfect time to think about a critical part of your home: the furnace. Prevention is a key step to avoid fire damage and fire cleaning. Here are a few simple steps maintaining your furnace and keeping your house safe, warm, and comfortable.

Maintaining your furnace

Turn Your Power Off

Before attempting any maintenance, it is always a good idea to turn the power off. The easiest way to do this is to trip the main fuse at your circuit breaker. If you know the correct breaker for the furnace, you can trip that breaker in particular. If the fuse has blown or the breaker was already switched, you should immediately call a professional and do not perform any other maintenance steps.

Check the Filter

Furnace filters are often used far longer than is recommended. This causes a buildup of dust, which can cause your furnace to work extra and can escalate to more difficult repairs. Filters usually last up to 90 days, but always check your furnace manual and the filter itself before installing. This is the easiest step to avoid needing fire cleaning services in the future.

Inspect the Thermostat

There could be an issue with the thermostat in your home or the furnace’s own thermostat. Check both, and adjust the thermostat up 5 degrees to be sure it is working properly. When you turn the power back on, the furnace should start working.

Notice Any Gas Odors

If your furnace smells of gas, immediately call a professional. Gas leaks are difficult to find and greatly increase the risk of fire damage.

Without proper care, a furnace can cause fire in your home. If you already have damage due to fire or smoke in your home, there are professionals who can assist you in fire cleaning and smoke cleaning. Although furnace maintenance may be the last thing on your mind as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, it will bring you peace of mind this fall.

Does Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy Cover Fire Damage?

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

House fire in a Rusellville, KY home

Recuperating from the loss associated with a home fire in Rusellville, KY, is hard enough on its own without trying to figure out what your homeowner’s insurance policy covers. While the fire restoration company will take care of repairing the damage to your home and restoring it to its original condition, it will be up to you to contact your insurance company to find out what’s covered. Here are the basics of what your home insurance will typically cover and what specific circumstances they won’t.

What Your Insurance Will Cover

Most common causes of a home fire are covered by a majority of insurance policies. Examples of scenarios where your home and personal belongings would be covered include:

  • Cooking fires
  • Accidental cigarette fires
  • Fires caused by children or pets
  • Electrical fires
  • Lightning and storms

Basically, if the fire happened due to circumstances out of your control or because of an accident, you will almost always be covered.

What Your Insurance Doesn’t Cover

There are two main exceptions that a basic homeowners insurance policy won’t cover.

Arson

If you for whatever reason decided to set fire to your own home, insurance will understandably not cover the costs of the damage. You might wonder why someone would purposely destroy their home; often, this occurs because people want to collect the money insurance gives for the damages.

Vacant Home

A vacant home fire is another situation that your insurance will not cover. If no one has entered your home for 30 days straight, it is considered vacant. However, you can purchase an endorsement to your policy to cover a vacant home. This is useful if you have a vacation home or property you only visit occasionally.

Although certainly a stressful situation, is it reassuring to learn that a home fire is almost always covered by your insurance policy! Unless arson was involved or your home was vacant at the time of the fire, you can expect to receive some substantial compensation for the damage that occurred.

Place candles out of reach of pets in your Franklin, KY home

Pet Safety Tips

Fire safety measures are critical for every occupant of a residence. Pet owners need a clear plan of action to protect animals in the event of a fire emergency. Here are five pet safety tips that you can act on today.

1. Make a Fire Escape Plan For Pets

A fire escape plan should account for the safety of pets. Decide who is responsible for each pet and delegate responsibility for important supplies. Bring pets with you when you do drills. Updating ID tags and microchips with current contact information is another pet preparation measure.

2. Exercise Caution With Open Flame

Don't leave candles, fireplaces, or other open flames unattended. Place candles out of the reach of pets or use safer alternatives, such as battery-powered LED candles.

3. Keep Pets Away From the Stove

The most common cause of house fires started by pets involves stove knobs. If a dog or cat accidently nudges these knobs, an electric burner or gas flow may turn on. You may want to keep pets out of the kitchen while you are not at home, install pet-safe covers, or remove knobs when the stove is not in use.

4. Keep Pet Records In a Fire Box

Gather pet records in a fire safe box. It is preferable take this box with you when you evacuate. If worst comes to worst, these documents may still be salvageable after a fire emergency.

5. Post Pet Decals Near Exterior Doors

Post a decal in the front window or near other exterior doors indicating the type and number of pets in the household. Notify firefighters if pets have been evacuated.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 500,000 pets are affected by fires each year. If a fire emergency occurs at a home in Franklin, KY, contact the fire department and a fire mitigation and restoration service.

Damage by Smoke: Tips for Filing a Claim

8/29/2018 (Permalink)

Chimney fire damage in an Oak Grove, KY home

When fire ravages your commercial property in Oak Grove, KY, you probably know you must document all the areas that were burned by the fire to file an insurance claim correctly. What may surprise you is all the smoke damage you’ll find after a fire. Even if the fire occurs in the building next door, your building could take on damage from the smoke that wafts over. Just like structural issues, smoke and soot damage must be carefully documented in order for your claim to have a better chance of getting accepted by the insurance company. Here are some tips on how to do so.

Necessary Information

Your insurance company will probably send an insurance adjuster to assess your property after you contact them, but you can help clarify the issues that need resolution by documenting all the necessary information. There are several things the documentation of your smoke damage should include:

  • Date of fire loss
  • Description of structures or damaged items
  • Location of damage
  • Police and fire department reports
  • Smoke cleaning bid from remediation experts

It is also a good idea to include pictures or video proof of the things on your list. The more relevant the information you can provide, the stronger your claim will be.

Objective Assessment

The insurance company may send out its own adjuster, but keep in mind the entity for whom he or she works. The company's adjuster may have a vested interest in underestimating damage. To ensure objectivity, it may be prudent to hire a public adjuster who has no reason to have an agenda to save the insurance company money. The public adjuster's assessment, along with the detailed bid from the company performing smoke cleaning services, can serve as advocates for getting you the amount required to fix your building.

Whether you are dealing with smoke damage from a fire in your building or the one next door, it is important to know how to get the most out of your insurance policy. By providing detailed descriptions of the damage and filing in a timely manner, you increase your chances of a fair payout.

The ABCs of Home Fire Extinguishers

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Your home in Hopkinsville, KY, may be your castle, but if you do not have a fire preparedness plan in place, that castle could quickly burn down.

The unique shape, markings, and color of the fire extinguisher have long been established and accepted. Therefore, when standing near a small fire, everyone knows to look for the long, red cylinder to use for fire suppression. What most people do not know is that there are different types of classifications of household fire suppressors, and once purchased, the chemicals inside are not good forever.

Classifications

The fire extinguisher has been around for over 150 years. Originally designed to put out combustible fires with potassium carbonate, as times changed and fires evolved, so did the fire suppressors. The units now come in three types:

Class A is for use on ordinary household combustibles.
Class B can be used on flammable gas or liquid.
Class C units are designed for use on electrical fires.

Although the specially designed fire containment containers used to be manufactured with only one of the various class of chemicals, the new and modern versions often contain all three. For that reason, most household extinguishers can put out a home fire and electrical fire at the same time.

Longevity

Fire repair and restoration teams stress the importance of understanding that fire extinguishers are not meant to last forever. Depending on the brand you buy, the manufacturers typically state that most expiration dates fall somewhere between five and fifteen years from purchase date. If the label does not have a date, or there is no inspection tag attached to the unit, look at the pressure gauge and recharge as soon as the needle falls below the green area.

Safety

Your home in Hopkinsville, KY, may be your castle, but if you do not have a fire preparedness plan in place, that castle could quickly burn down. Keep your fire extinguisher handy, do not store it away in inaccessible areas. It only takes a few moments for a fire to overwhelm a room, but if you have the suppressor close at hand, you can be on top of the fire and not let it grow out of control. How To Use a Fire Extinguisher

5/19/2018 (Permalink)

Using a fire extinguisher to put out commercial fires.

How To Use a Fire Extinguisher.

A fire extinguisher is a helpful safety tool for suppressing small to medium-sized fires and limiting fire damage. As soon as a fire starts, get the extinguisher and identify a safe evacuation path. You should check to make sure that the extinguisher you have on hand contains a suitable substance for the type of fire you are trying to suppress. It is also a good idea to sound the fire alarm in a commercial property and contact the fire department before attempting to suppress a fire.

Whether you have never used a extinguisher or it has been a long time since you experienced a fire emergency, here are four simple steps you can follow.

1. Pull the pin. Pulling the pin on a extinguisher will break the tamper seal.
2. Aim the fire extinguisher nozzle, hose, or horn. Point the dispenser at the base of the fire. Avoid making contact with the discharge horn on a CO2 extinguisher, as it may become very cold.
3. Squeeze the handle. Squeeze the handle to dispense the substance within the extinguisher in the direction of the fire.
4. Spray from side to side. Move the spray horizontally across the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Keep in mind that a fire may seem to be out and then reignite.

Keep watching the affected area to make sure the fire does not restart or have firefighters inspect the area to make sure it is out. Once you use a fire extinguisher you will need to either refill or replace the extinguisher, depending on whether the design is reusable or disposable. Reusable extinguishers cost more up front but less to refill than buying a new disposable extinguisher. If your commercial property in Hopkinsville, KY sustains fire damage from a kitchen fire or electrical fire, you should contact a commercial restoration company.

3 Ways To Prevent Accidental Fire Sprinkler Activation

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

Fire sprinklers are lifesavers, but only when they're functioning properly. When they go off accidentally, sprinklers can cause hundreds—sometimes even thousands—of dollars in commercial property damage. Fortunately, proper sprinkler maintenance can prevent most accidental activations in Franklin, KY. Here's how to help ensure your systems only activate when you need them to.

1. Avoid High Temperatures

Contrary to popular belief, sprinklers typically activate when they're exposed to high temperatures, not when they're exposed to smoke. Therefore, it can be important to keep heat sources away from your sprinkler. Here are some common sources:

*Hearth fires
*Strong lights
*Heat Lamps
*Candles Ovens and stoves

Consider these heat sources before installing your system. If any are hot enough to trigger your sprinkler (roughly 130 degrees Fahrenheit or 54 degrees Celsius), separate them. Doing so can greatly reduce your risk of accidental activation.

2. Prepare for Cold Temperatures

Just like hot temperatures, cold temperatures can lead to accidental sprinkler leakages. That's because when water freezes, it expands. If that frozen water is inside a confined space (your sprinkler's pipe, for instance), it will often break whatever's holding it.

Follow cold-weather sprinkler maintenance best practices. For starters, install insulation materials for your sprinkler pipes, such as foam sleeves. Also, keeping consistent heat throughout your building will often preclude water in pipes from freezing. That doesn't mean pointing intense lights at the pipes—you already know that's a mistake. Just keep the general temperature of the building above freezing.

3. Keep Sprinkler Piping Clear

Piping for fire sprinklers is made to put out fires; it's not meant for use as a pull-up bar. This may sound funny, but many accidental sprinkler activations occur when people assume pipes hold more weight than they truly can. Never allow anyone to hang anything on sprinkler pipes. Though they may appear sturdy, these pipes aren't usually made to support the weight of a human body.

For residents of Franklin, KY, these sprinkler maintenance tips should prevent accidental activations before they ever happen. If you do have a water damage from a sprinkler system going off, work with professional restoration experts.
